Start your day off right at one of 5 terrific Gloucester breakfast destinations

TOWN:Gloucester
WHAT:Restaurants that treat breakfast as a creative opportunity
WHY:Discovering that there’s no such thing as an easy decision at these Gloucester eateries

I have heard that some people actually skip breakfast. That’s crazy talk. If you’ve got the time and appetite, seek out a breakfast to remember at one of these great breakfast restaurants in Gloucester Massachusetts. I guarantee that you will not disappointed.

In a rush? Go ahead and grab a cup of excellent coffee and a muffin at one of the local cafés on Cape Ann.

Charlie’s Place

This neighborhood standby has been a Gloucester favorite for years. It’s just a few short blocks from Good Harbor Beach, so is an easy stop at the start of a beach day.

The menu hits all the classics, and the efficient service is appreciated. Sit at the counter on a classic diner stool or grab a table, you’re sure to find something that starts your morning off right!

George’s Restaurant and Bar

This is the first Gloucester breakfast spot you’ll encounter as you drive down Washington Street off the rotary at the end of Route 128. George’s breakfast remains a mainstay of Gloucester mornings.

George’s menu brings classics to the table with some new and creative touches, all expertly prepared. Specialties include Chicken Biscuits and Gravy, Loaded Avocado Toast and Jorge’s Breakfast Burrito. Check out their unique Breakfast Boat, filled with scrambled eggs and your choice of fillings.

Mom’s Kitchen

Mom’s is a Gloucester treasure, offers comfort food that’s every bit as funky and creative as the city itself. Breakfast choices are an excruciating exercise is decision making. Mom’s Kitchen doesn’t make it easy. Giant mouthwatering cinnamon rolls? done. Homemade fish cakes Benedict? You got it. Got a hankering for a meatloaf omelet? No problem. As you leave Mom, you’ll be already planning to get back and try the other choices that caught your eye.

Sugar Magnolias

This icon on Gloucester’s lively Main Street took a long break, but it isn’t because of lack of fans. The restaurant is spacious, with booth, table and counter seating.

The menu here casts a wide net, and includes breakfasts choices to please everyone. If you’re an adventurous eater, prepare to be dazzled: Pineapple Fritters; Carrot Cake Pancakes with maple butter; Arugula Sandwich with egg, goat cheese and fig preserve; Crab Cake Benedict. A personal favorite is Irish Benedict with grilled cornbread and hash.

We are happy to report that Sugar Magnolias is reopening soon! Visit them on Facebook for a re-launch announcement.

Two Sisters Coffee Shop (Temporarily closed)

How’s this for a serendipitous back story? Two Sisters Coffee Shop was launched by sisters Patty Philbrick and Jackie Phinney in 2001. They sold the restaurant to sisters Maura and Chris McCarthy in 2019, jumping right in where Patty and Jackie left off and kept the name, natch!

Located on Washington Street, this cozy spot does breakfast justice with a focused menu of classics with a twist.

Gloucester’s Portuguese/fishing heritage get a nod with Fish Cakes and Linguica. If you’re jonesing for a taste of the South, try their authentic Sausage Gravy and Biscuits. And don’t miss Dottie’s Specialties that include delicious Omelettes and Eggs Benedict options.

The service here is friendly and the vibe just right. Visitors will find themselves quickly feeling right at home.

NOTE: The Gloucester breakfast scene sorely misses Lee’s, Willow Rest and Zeke’s, three Gloucester institutions that sadly are no longer in operation.
