The Danvers Rail Trail is a treat for bike riders of any level

TOWN:Danvers, Topsfield, Wenham
WHAT:An easy-riding rail-trail through neighborhoods, woods and marshland
WHY:This trail is fun for all, and riding without traffic can be reassuring for inexperienced riders

The Danvers Rail Trail is a 4-plus mile hard-surfaced bike, hike and walking trail that is part of the larger Border to Boston 70-mile trail, an ambitious endeavor that links trails in 20 towns throughout the North Shore. The trail passes through residential neighborhoods, wetlands and meadows, and is one of the few rail trails on the North Shore. It provides a perfect ride from Danvers to Topsfield and back, an 11.2 mile out-and-back. The trail can be ridden on any type of bike – the surface is compacted stone dust or paved, and is well-maintained. A hybrid or gravel bike is ideal for the route. There are several road crossings, three of which have flashing lights that a rider can activate. Cars in the area are generally respectful, but do use caution when crossing Routes 97 and 1.

An easy place to start your ride is in Danvers center at the Hobart Street Parking lot. There is ample parking, a porta-john and a map kiosk to get you oriented. You’re also near Maple Street with its dining options before or after your ride.

To extend your ride, consider riding the power line right-of-way at the Topsfield end of the trail. The single track is fairly easy riding for another mile plus. On the Danvers end, the trail extends to Lowell Street in Peabody. I’ve found that following directions, it is possible to hook up with another bike trail in Peabody, but it requires riding on busy Lowell Street for several blocks and is not recommended for the time being.
